A Dummy’s Guide to Enjoying the Masters

If you’re anything like me, you don’t understand the appeal of golf. The game is slow, the crowd is quiet, the ball is practically impossible to follow on the TV screen, and each round is a whopping four hours long.

But, after being forced to endure countless Sunday afternoons with my father and the Golf Channel, I’ve managed to pick up enough to make the Masters somewhat enjoyable. And if I can find some redeeming qualities in golf – anyone can. So if you find yourself forced to endure the tournament, here are a few pointers:

1.    It’s harder than it looks.

Trust me, when you appreciate the difficulty of navigating a golf course, the sport becomes a little more enjoyable to watch. I like to think of it as the extremely tame version of “Man vs. Wild.” Each golfer has to navigate the obstacles and hazards of the golf course, while considering the climate and natural environment. Wind, rain, trees, type of grass…they all impact the game.

2.    Tiger Woods is not the only good golfer.

This isn’t like watching the Globetrotters. The winner is not a foregone conclusion. Believe it or not, there are plenty of great golfers in the PGA Tour that have the talent to win the Masters. Last year’s champion was 33 year old Bubba Watson, with Tiger finishing 7th. It’s anyone’s tournament to win.

3.    Golf has is its own sense of style.

When it comes to golfing attire, all fashion rules and trends go out the window - and I’m not just talking about the coveted green blazer. Colors and patterns are seen in ways that defy fashion logic. Sweater vests and visors not normally seen on anyone under the age of 75 become standard. Unfortunately, John Daly’s infamous pants won’t be seen in this year’s Masters, but there are plenty of other golf style gurus to watch.

Such as Ian Poulter and his colorful pant collection:

And Rickie Fowler’s love of unicolor neon outfits:

4.    The last round is the best.

If you want to watch the most exciting part of the Masters, wait until the last round. As in every sport, the competition intensifies as it time runs out. Just look at last year’s dramatic finish, with Bubba Watson squeaking through to victory in extra holes.  Instead of trying to sustain interest for the entire tournament, wait until the top four golfers are vying for the champion title. They are the last four golfers out on Sunday, starting at 12:30pm EDT.

5.    The Master’s is a time-honored PGA tradition.

If all else fails, it’s helpful to remember that the Masters is an American institution. For the past 80 years (with the exception of 1943-1945, due to World War Two), golfers have traveled to Augusta National Golf Club to compete. The winner receives a substantial cash prize, a lifetime membership to Augusta National, and the (slightly outdated) hunter green blazer. It’s not just a tournament – it’s a pastime.
