If you follow @SUAthletics, it’s time to move to the East Coast. Stanford University traded the Twitter handle to Syracuse for, among other things, a box of Oranges. Stanford’s athletic updates will now reside at @GoStanford:
“Obviously we’re thrilled to activate @GoStanford as our official Twitter handle and pull off this dynamic trade,” said Bernard Muir, The Jaquish & Kenninger director of athletics at Stanford, in the statement. “From a branding standpoint, this trade makes sense for both schools. We held both accounts — the social media equivalent to having two starting quarterbacks, and we wanted to derive as much value fun as possible. We expect great things from our new starter, @GoStanford, and wish @SUAthletics good luck in a new home.”
But wait, one might ask: Can’t you simply change your Twitter handle at will without “trading” your old one across the country? Of course you can, but where’s the fun - or the chance for free publicity - in that? Besides, chances are most of the people following @SUAthletics probably thought they were following Syracuse already, anyway.
No comment yet from the New York Yankees, who have probably been trying to trade Alex Rodriguez’s Twitter handle to someone who doesn’t speak English.
