Newly-elected Georgia Legislator Michael Caldwell to Address CPAC

Michael Caldwell is a sales representative and partial owner of Python Safety, a Kennesaw State University alumni, a loving husband, a state house representative, and a 20-something?

That’s right, millennials, we have a 1989-er addressing the world’s largest gathering of right-leaning political activists this year. And to the best of our researching ability, we have discovered Caldwell to be the youngest currently-serving state legislator in the United States. Representative Caldwell was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2012 after a successful primary against the eight-year incumbent. Caldwell first ran for the office in 2010 at age 20. Caldwell’s success stems from a widely-discussed but rarely seen approach to governing: ethics and transparency.

The 23-year-old is one of only three Georgia legislators that do not accept money or gifts from lobbyists, PACs, or from out of state. He also authored and pre-filed Georgia’s HR 5, a resolution proposing consecutive term limits for Georgia lawmakers. Caldwell even returns his unused campaign funds at the end of each election cycle, putting him at a stark fundraising disadvantage, despite his incumbency.

Accountability is not lost on Caldwell, either. His website dons a campaign finance fundtracker that shows his constituents where every penny of campaign money goes. And as far as the actual legislating? Caldwell posts every vote he makes, as well as the reasoning behind it, on a legislative tracker. He also posts the votes to his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

On Saturday, March 16, 2013, Caldwell will join 9 others from around the country in the Potomac Ballroom of the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center for CPAC’s first-time panel, “10 Conservatives under 40,” in honor of CPAC’s fortieth anniversary.

While the CPAC program currently states that the Honorable Michael Caldwell has been “invited” to speak, you heard the confirmation on ViralRead first:

“I am very much looking forward to this outstanding opportunity. ” Rep. Caldwell tells ViralRead. “I hope that other young conservatives will see that it is possible to make a difference in politics and in their community. I’m honored every day to represent the people of district 20 and I look forward to speaking about my job as a representative to the crowd at CPAC.”
