Pentagon: Kim Jong Un May Attack to “Save Face”

Tensions are mounting on the Korean Peninsula this week as the US and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) are engaging in a dangerous game of military one-upmanship. The pace of combative rhetoric began accelerating after North Korea conducted an underground nuclear detonation test on February 12, 2013.

After the test, the UN ratified a fresh round of sanctions, which were apparently mistaken by Kim Jong Un for live fire. The rogue state has since severed all remaining communication with the South. The US has conducted two separate Bomber (one B-52, one B-2 Stealth) sorties as a deterrent, increasingly infuriating the dictator after each flight.

Over at the UK Telegraph, it is being reported that a careful analysis of maps captured in state-run photographs of Kim Jong Un show plans to attack the US mainland. Targets include Austin, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC. More from The Telegraph:

“He finally signed the plan on technical preparations of strategic rockets, ordering them to be on standby to fire so that they may strike any time the US mainland, its military bases in the operational theatres in the Pacific, including Hawaii and Guam, and those in South Korea,” the state-run KCNA news agency reported. It added that the B2 test flights demonstrated Washington’s “hostile intent” and said the “reckless” act had gone “beyond the phase of threat and blackmail.”

Prior to today, the threats have mostly been dismissed by the US as exaggerated saber-rattling. However, new fears are surfacing that Un may be feeling like he has painted himself into a corner. Fox News is reporting that the Pentagon is beginning to take into serious consideration the prospect of some type of military action by the North. Concern is increasing that the dictator may order an attack just to save face and prove himself a capable military leader.

This is certainly a very dangerous situation, especially for US allies Japan and South Korea, if the unstable dictator decides to act.
