15th seed Florida Gulf Coast University’s magical run through the NCAA Tournament came to a crashing halt last night against the third seed Florida Gators, losing 62-50 in the Sweet 16 last night.

“It was great to see the excitement across the country with the underdog, and it’s just a real feeling when you’re the underdog and you’re the talk of the nation,” FGCU coach Andy Enfield said. “Our plan wasn’t to become some great national story. Our plan was to go in and compete and win games. It was unbelievable to see the excitement and passion of not only our local community, the students, but also the national level. Our players believed, and they accomplished something special.”

FGCU was the obvious fan favorite from the second they ran on the court — to a loud roar from the Cowboys Stadium crowd. When the Gators came out for the game start, they were roundly booed.

Sherwood Brown finished with 14 points, and Corey Fieler (12 points) and Christophe Varidel (10 points) were the only other Eagles with double figures.

The Gators shot off to a 7-0 run in the second half as FGCU hit one of its first five shots. Eric McKnight broke the scoreless stretch with a dunk at 17:07.

Though the Eagles lost last night, do not count them out in the future.

“There are a lot of big things coming to FGCU,” Brown said. “And we can’t wait to see those.”

And on the upside, coach Enfield is, of course, still married to a Maxim cover girl.  And while FGCU’s run may have ended, we at Viral Read are still committed to reminding you of this fact as often as possible.
