Rafael Nadal sure does love him some clay - court that is. On Saturday, the Spaniard picked up his 8th win on the orange clay of the French Open.
From Yahoo Sports:
Rafael Nadal is now in a class of his own in tennis history after winning his eighth French Open title on Sunday at Roland Garros, becoming the only man in tennis history to win the same Grand Slam eight times.
Nadal took out fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in what can only be considered a victory lap of sorts for the now 12-time Grand Slam champion.
12 time Grand Slams, so this was old hat to him. Not even road-flair-protestor-guy could bother him.
No idea what that dude was protesting, but at least he had his clothes on.
On a bittersweet note, for Nadal, despite his win he dropped in the worldwide rankings from 4th to 5th, swapping places with David Ferrer…..the guy he just beat in the French Open!
PARIS — Eight-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal drops from No. 4 to No. 5 in the ATP rankings this week, swapping places with David Ferrer, the man he beat in the Roland Garros final.
Nadal only retained the ranking points he earned by winning last year’s French Open, while Ferrer gained points by reaching his first Grand Slam final.
“Yeah, it’s strange, no? I lost the final against Rafael, but tomorrow I am going to be No. 4 and him No. 5,” Ferrer joked after Sunday’s play. “I prefer to win here and to stay No. 5.”
So basically “You won, but not well enough; we’re still dropping your rank!”
How very…French!
