The last time Tim Tebow started as a quarterback in the NFL he was a member of the Denver Broncos, and he was on the short end of a blow-out loss to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Come this Fall, he will now be playing alongside Brady as the newest member of the vaunted franchise.
ESPN reports that Tebow signed a two-year contract that includes no guaranteed money, and that he is officially listed as a QB on their 2013-14 roster. Tebow will compete with Ryan Mallett for the back-up position.
Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports had previously reported that Pats head coach Bill Belichick “hates” Tim Tebow, though Belichick has refuted that report. The move will also reunite Tebow with former Broncos’ head coach Josh McDaniels who was responsible for bringing the young QB into the league, drafting him in the first round. McDaniels is now back at his previous job as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator.
Last season, the New York Jets acquired Tebow in a trade with Denver and proceeded to let him languish on the bench for most of the year after flashy promises from head coach Rex Ryan that he would be used in a variety of creative ways. Tebow played very little and was even overlooked in favor of Greg McElroy to start at QB when Mark Sanchez was benched for his poor play. The Jets released Tebow this off-season.
Tebow’s career in the NFL seemed finished, as no teams showed interest in acquiring him - many citing a lack of interest in dealing with the “Tebowmania” circus that is part and parcel of the popular player’s presence on a team. Many speculated he’d end up in the Canadian Football League, but there were no takers in the Great White North either.
However, it’s unlikely that Tebow’s committed fan base will cause any disruption out at Foxboro, as Coach Belichick is legendarily tight-lipped with the press. And if any coach will find a way to make use of Tebow’s considerable intangibles, it is, indeed, “The Hoodie” who will succeed.
Just don’t expect to see the notorious curmudgeon “Tebowing” any time soon.
Fitzy may have this one right: Maybe Belichick just wants to rub the Jets nose in it by making Tebow work for them.
