Screaming During Childbirth can Cost You

Having a baby is no joke. Ask any mother who has gone through the process of giving birth and they’ll tell you that it can be one of the most excruciatingly painful experiences ever.

I had two, one of whom was 9 pounds and 7 ounces. Did I scream out in pain? Of course I did, what kind of stupid question is that? Did I get punished for it? No, what kind of inhumane world do you think we live in and why would you ask such a ridiculous question?

Not so ridiculous at a Hospital in Zimbabwe.

Transparency International discovered this shocking injustice during one of their visits to the country. As a non-governmental organization that reports on corruption all around the world, this shocking information was part of their annual Global Corruption Barometer.

The report states that women were charged $5 everytime they would scream out in pain for ‘raising a false alarm’ and the new mothers who couldn’t pay the fines were reportedly kept at the hospital until the full bill was paid. Leaving many families scrambling to come up with the money.

Did I forget to mention that interest was also added and that the cost of childbirth is $50?

“Wow, that’s cheap!” you say, but not when it’s about the third of the average $150 income in that part of the world. Not when you’re part of the 95% of the country who is unemployed making Zimbabwe one of the poorest countries in the world.

The Deputy Prime minister was contacted by the group and an investigation was ordered resulting in a stop to the ridiculous fines but the hospital charge still remain.

Transparency International has since set up a workshop to raise awareness so the people of Zimbabwe would know how to handle acts of corruption and bribary and have a voice against injustice.

What a cruel world we live in eh? Yet what a wonderful thing it is to be able to help each other out one injustice at a time.
