Actress Eileen Brennan Passes Away at 80

Eileen Brennan had the stuff.

Staying within the realm of comedy for the majority of her career, Brennan was perhaps best known early on for a turn in the decidedly unfunny Oscar-nominated The Last Picture Showas well as The Sting with Paul Newman and stints on tv shows Kojak and Barney Miller.

It was her guest spot on tv’s All In The Family that earned Brennan a place as one of Hollywood’s most dependable funny ladies- resulting in memorable performances in Neil Simon‘s Murder By Death, the cult classic Clue as Mrs. Peacock, and tv’s Will and GraceIt was her performance as Capt. Doreen Lewis opposite Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin, however, that landed her an Oscar nomination. She would later reprise the role in the television series of the same name and win her only Emmy out of 7 career nominations.

A car accident in 1982 nearly took her life. After extensive surgeries to repair the damage done, Brennan began a comeback that culminated in her Emmy-nominated role on Will and Grace.
