Fox‘s once-and-maybe-never-again king show American Idol has recently announced that it will be retaining its most vanilla, good guy/judge- the happy-go-lucky Keith Urban.

The Aussie country singer often found himself the peacemaker in the frequent cat-fights between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj last season. The fights were believed by many to be the reason for Idol‘s steady decline in ratings. Neither Carey, Minaj nor the sole remaining original judge Randy Jackson will return next season.

This marks the second straight season of changes for Idol- which has struggled to hold on to its celebrity judges since the departure of Paula Abdul seemed to break the mega-hit’s flow. Kara dioGuardi, Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have all tried their hand and left within 2 seasons (one for Ellen).

Host Ryan Seacrest will also join Urban.
