Being a loyal fan of a bad baseball team is never really easy, but the supporters of the 25-39, 4th in the NL East New York Mets can now add contempt and mocking from professional sportscasters to their litany of woes.
Bob Costas, during a break in coverage from this weekend’s US Open Championship, reviewed the Sunday matchup between the Mets and the Chicago Cubs:
To be fair, neither team is performing well this year, and the trio of wild throws in the top of the 5th inning deserves a slight amount of ridicule (after all, these players play baseball for a living - and they get paid to play well and win), but Costas holds nothing back. While the NBC veteran sports guru has a history of speaking his mind and sharing his opinion, comments like “…not exactly a Battle of the Titans” and (in regards to the team celebrating such a trivial win) “…another indication of the ongoing decline of Western Civilization,” are pretty brash. With the ongoing NSA scandal and Arnold returning for Terminator 5 among other issues, this is what indicates the fall of Western Civilization?
The Twittersphere responded to the incident, including baseball great Chipper Jones and Mets Pitcher Jeremy Hefner:
I’m thinking Mets fans will let Bob Costas know about that little comment.

Hey Mr. Costas.. We will enjoy our wins!

@RealCJ10 @CMHollon bad teams get criticized. #Mets should be more concerned about their team’ performance than #Costas‘ comments about them

Somebody get Bob Costas off the air. I’ve always disliked his smarminess but this us just over the top

I respect Bob Costas as a broadcaster, but his comments today are a classic example of a non athlete not "getting it" #allwinsarebig #LGM

ViralRead knows the real reason Costas was a little insensitive toward the Mets: he’s just antsy (like we all are!) waiting for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi to get here!
