Cleveland Kidnapper Ariel Castro Commits Suicide in Prison

The man who held three women hostage for years in his Cleveland home has committed suicide in prison, officials said Tuesday. Ariel Castro, 53, “was found hanging in his cell around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient,” the Associated Press reported. “Prison medical staff performed CPR before Castro was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

Castro was arrested in May after three women were rescued from what was dubbed the “House of Horrors” where Castro had imprisoned and raped them. Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were kidnapped between 2002 and 2004, when the women were 14, 16 and 20. During her captivity, Berry gave birth to a  6-year-old daughter Jocelyn. Castro committed suicide just days after he was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years on his guilty plea to 937 counts including kidnapping and rape.
