First Hagel Vote Scheduled for Tomorrow

The first vote on whether or not former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel should be confirmed as Secretary of Defense has been scheduled for tomorrow. Hagel has come under fire for his previous statements about Israel, Iran and the pro-Israel lobby’s role in U.S. foreign policy.

Michigan Senator and Chairman of the Armed Services Committee Carl Levin announced that his committee will vote on Hagel’s confirmation tomorrow afternoon. The committee, controlled by Democrats, is widely anticipated to recommend Hagel to the entire Senate, although there is an open question about whether the former Cornhusker Republican will receive any Republican votes.

If approved by the committee, as anticipated, Hagel’s confirmation would go to the entire Senate, where some Republican leaders have suggested he will face a filibuster. If that occurs, Hagel will need 60 votes for confirmation, as opposed to the traditional 51 votes.
