Starbucks CEO Defends Support for Gay Marriage to Stockholder

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz defended his support for same sex marriage during a stockholders meeting last week.

At the meeting, stockholder Tim Strohbar suggested the company’s stock had dipped after the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) began a “Dump Starbucks” campaign.

Schultz politely told Strohbar if he didn’t like the company’s stance, he could buy stock in another company. Below is the exchange between the two men.

Strohbar - In the first full quarter after this boycott was announced, our sales and our earnings — shall we say politely — were a bit disappointing.

Schultz - If you feel, respectfully, that you can get a higher return than the 38 percent you got last year, it’s a free country. You can sell your shares of Starbucks and buy shares in another company. Thank you very much,” he said, to loud applause from the audience
