Proposed Anti-Racism Law Causes Breakdown of Greek Coalition

Golden-Dawn

The fragile coalition between three political parties in Greece broke down on Friday over a proposed anti-racism bill, according to the Los Angeles Times.  Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras of the conservative New Democracy Party objected to language in the bill “rejecting what his aides call ‘the criminalization of political speech’ in Greece[.]” The other two members of the coalition, the Socialist and Democratic Left parties, attempted to propose the bill in Paliament, causing Samaras to block the vote by proposing his own bill.

The proposed bill comes amid pressure by the European Union and World Jewish Congress to strengthen anti-racism laws. It would also criminalize some of the tactics used by Greece’s Golden Dawn party, which critics describe as ‘Nazi-esque’. The party seeks the expulsion of immigrants from Greece, and has grown in popularity during Greece’s ongoing economic problems.
