In a country where 55% of marriages end in divorce, stories of enduring love inspire those who still believe in true love in its purest form.
Helen and Les Brown of Long Beach, California lived out that very fairytale of remaining together through the good and bad, through sickness and in health, till death do us part and that is exactly what they did.
Born on New Years Eve 1918, they passed away a day apart after 75 years of marriage. Helen passed away on July 16th of stomach cancer and her Les of Parkinson’s disease, the day after. They were both 94 years old.
That’s right, 75 years of loving, fighting, crying, compromising and most importantly dignity in keeping their marriage vows.
Their son said that they didn’t have the perfect marriage by any means but they worked it out and remained faithful to each other until the very end.
Like a story out of a movie, they met in high school and eloped at 18 years old because their parents did not think a marriage between a wealthy man and a working middle class girl could ever work out.
Boy, were they wrong.
Zack Henderson, an owner of a store the couple shopped at daily said, “About a year ago, Helen had her hand on his face and they were cheek to cheek,” Henderson said. “She said, ‘Isn’t he the most handsome man you’ve ever seen?’ hat’s exactly how they were. They were full of love and passion.”
Cheers to Mr. and Mrs. Brown, thanks for teaching us what it means to truly love and be loved in return.
