Meyer Defends Himself, Florida

Urban Meyer, the former head coach of the University of Florida and current coach of the Ohio State University, has finally broken his silence on the Aaron Hernandez situation. Hernandez played for Meyer at Florida from 2007-09, and was even vouched for by the coach when Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick came calling.

In a text to the Columbus Dispatch, Meyer wrote, “Prayers and thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim. Relating or blaming these serious charges to the University of Florida, myself or our staff is wrong and irresponsible.”

Until writing that text, Meyer had been silent in regards to the Hernandez murder accusations, but said his decision to speak out was prompted by false reports about Hernandez’s time at Florida.

“I just received an email from a friend where there is an accusation of multiple failed drug tests by Hernandez covered up by University of Florida or the coaching staff. This is absolutely not true,” Meyer continued in his text to the Columbus Dispatch. “Hernandez was held to the same drug testing policy as every other player. He was an athlete at Florida 4-7 yrs ago and there are some comments being made that are not correct. Our staff, myself and our families worked very hard to mentor and guide him.”

Hernandez is currently being charged with first degree murder
