2013 U.S. Open Preview

Golf’s US Open Championship kicks off this week at Merion Golf Club located just outside of Philadelphia. The US Open is regarded as one of the most unique championships throughout pro sports. Any golfer with a handicap and a dream has a chance to play through one of the many qualifying events throughout the country. Those who qualify will face golf’s toughest test of the year with rough that would make the average weekend hacker beg for mercy.

So who wins? Merion may play easier than most US Opens after rain soaked the course for much of last week. Making birdies is always important but not making any huge mistakes is usually the key to a successful round at the US Open. Tiger Woods will come into the tournament as the heavy favorite and rightfully so. The world’s number 1 player has been fantastic for much of 2013 and loves the big stage of the major championships. Tiger, Rory McIlroy, and Adam Scott will be grouped together for the first two days of the tournament highlighting the early rounds.

My prediction: Matt Kuchar wins his first major championship.
