Imagine waking up after a night on the town to your phone blowing up with questions about your arrest for knocking someone out in a bar fight.
That’s what happened to San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews this morning as he awoke to find out reports were circling that he was involved in a bar fight, had knocked someone out, and had been arrested.
While there were some dubiously sourced reports floating around the internet this morning, Chargers running back Ryan Mathews apparently has not been arrested.
According to U-T San Diego, Mathews was not involved in an alleged bar fight. PFT has separately confirmed he was not arrested by the SDPD, and there’s also no indication of an arrest of anyone named Ryan Mathews in San Diego County’s online jail record.
“We can say that he was definitely not arrested by SDPD,” San Diego Police Department Sgt. Robin Rose told U-T San Diego, “but there might have been a separate arrest that lead to that [report]. . . . It was not Ryan Mathews.”
The officer did confirm that there was a fight outside a nightclub, and that someone not Mathews was arrested, but did not release that person’s name.
Not remembering anything after a night out at a bar isn’t really uncommon, but Mathews set the record straight with this tweet:
Home healthy and happy! Don’t know how my name got in this but I’m good!

And he then told Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego:
Ryan Mathews upset his name became involved: “I didn’t hit anybody. I wasn’t arrested. … I didn’t see a fight. I didn’t see anything”

You know it’s a bad time for the NFL when the big news is that one of their stars was not arrested. Considering the number of arrests the league has seen this year alone (27 in total), I’m sure NFL executives were celebrating pretty hard.
But hopefully not hard enough to end up in a bar fight.
