Missing Brown Student Misidentified as the Boston Bomber by Reddit Found Dead

USA Today is reporting the body of Sunil Tripathi was recovered from water off Indian Point Park in Rhode Island.

Tripathi was the missing Brown University student mistakenly identified by amateur “detectives” on Reddit and other social media sites as linked to the Boston Marathon Bombings.

According to USA Today, Health Department spokeswoman Dara Chadwick said Thursday he was identified through dental records.

Crowdsourcing groups reported via Reddit that the suspect in a baseball cap resembled Tripathi who had been missing since March 15. His name even topped the trending list on Twitter

After the April 15 bombings of the Boston Marathon, crowdsourcing groups drawing upon photos released by the FBI of a suspect erroneously reported via Reddit, a social news website, that the person in a baseball cap strongly resembled the missing student.

The problem was that Tripathi had been missing since March 15. It is not clear at this point how long Tripathi has been dead nor how he died.

“… though started with noble intentions, some of the activity on reddit fueled online witch hunts and dangerous speculation which spiraled into very negative consequences for innocent parties. The reddit staff and the millions of people on reddit around the world deeply regret that this happened. We have apologized privately to the family of missing college student Sunil Tripathi, as have various users and moderators. We want to take this opportunity to apologize publicly for the pain they have had to endure. We hope that this painful event will be channeled into something positive and the increased awareness will lead to Sunil’s quick and safe return home. We encourage everyone to join and show your support to the Tripathi family and their search,” Reddit General Manager Erik Martin said in a statement Monday.
