Rick Santorum Will Speak at Iowa Event Next Week

Perhaps signaling his intention to make another bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, Rick Santorum announced Monday that he will speak at an event next week in Iowa sponsored by the state’s largest social conservative organization.

Santorum will give the keynote address at the Iowa Faith & Freedom Coalition’s 13th Annual Spring Kick Off April 15 at Des Moines Christian School in Urbandale.

“Senator Santorum’s remarks will focus on the future of the Republican Party and what must be done to ensure our party’s future viability,” the former Pennsylvania senator’s non-profit group Patriot Voices said in a media advisory. “He will discuss how our economic and social priorities are uniquely interwoven, particularly how they both impact our country’s future economic prosperity and our ability to restore the American dream for hardworking Americans and future generations.”

Santorum scored a narrow victory in last year’s Iowa GOP caucus, surging from fifth in public opinion polls to defeat eventual Republican nominee Mitt Romney by a 34-vote margin in the Hawkeye State, whose quadrennial caucuses are the start of the presidential campaign. Support from pro-life activists and evangelical Christians was credited with helping Santorum, a staunch Catholic and father of seven, score his Iowa upset. Santorum went on to win contests in 10 other states - including Colorado, Missouri, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Louisiana — before he ended his campaign in April 2012. He finished second to Romney in the Republican delegate count, winning nearly 4 million votes in GOP caucuses and primaries.

Indicating that Santorum’s visit would include more stops in the Hawkeye State, the announcement from Patriot Voices concluded: “Additional Iowa events will be added and announced this week.”
